Carylanna Taylor, PhD

Carylanna is an anthropologist and filmmaker.
Originally from southwestern Pennsylvania, Carylanna spent over twenty years teaching and researching in Latin America and the US with a focus on migration, environment, and development. An applied cultural anthropologist (PhD University of South Florida), Carylanna is passionate about sharing her deep appreciation for cultural and human diversity and for scientific understanding. Her work received recognition through National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, and Fulbright grants.
Interested in photography and writing since childhood, Carylanna’s first film was a documentary short for a visual anthropology class called ANTHROPOLOGY 2.0.
In 2012, she partnered with Jacob in First Encounter Productions to apply her anthropology and experiences through film. Their work together includes: PAINTING THE WAY TO THE MOON (2015, Best Documentary at Philip K. Dick, Boston Sci-Fi, and NYLA film festivals) and three narrative shorts, including EVERY OTHER WEEKEND (2016, Best Short, Inwood Film Festival).
ANYA is Carylanna's first narrative feature.
